Bonmayuri Kalita, Artistic Director and Founder

Bonmayuri Kalita, a multifaceted artist of eastern classical and modern dance, is the founder and artistic director of Natyasangam Dance Academy in Colorado Springs, CO.  She is a renowned Bharatanatyam and Sattriya dance performer. She has traveled extensively to perform in numerous, prestigious venues worldwide. She is dedicated to promoting and preserving the ancient and modern dances of India.

She learned Bharatanatyam under the guidance of legendary gurus of Indian Classical dances, Padma Shri Guru Adyar K. Lakshman and Guru Indira P.P. Bora, and Sattriya Dance under Guru Indira P. P. Bora (as well asGuru Bhuban Bora).  Both teachers are disciples of Rukmini Devi Arundale, the original founder of the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam. She has achieved excellence in Bharatanatyam and Sattriya (the dance of her home state of Assam) and has performed in numerous venues in India, Europe and the United States.

In 2002, Bonmayuri began training young students in Colorado. Today, Bonmayuri and her qualified assistants teach dance to students of all ages. Since the inception of her studio, 11 dancers have completed Arangetram under her guidance. Two years in a row, Natyasangam Dance Academy students have placed first and second in Colorado state level Bharatanatyam dance competitions, 2012 and 2013.

Bonmayuri’s talents in performance and teaching are only surpassed by her exceptional choreography. Her amazing gifts are clearly portrayed in her performances and recital programs. Her memorable performances have been featured by several television programs -- KKTV 11 News of Colorado Springs, FOX21 News Channel, and several news channels in North East India. Recently, the Opera Theatre of the Rockies invited Bonmayuri to perform alongside their singers in the production of the opera Lakme in Colorado Springs.

Bonmayuri is also an active philanthropist. She participates in charitable events each year. Some organizations that she has helped with fundraising are the Tsunami Relief Fundraising Concert at The Newman Center in Denver, ASHA for Education, Urban League, Peace Officers’ Memorial, Red Cross, Colorado College, Care and Share, Colorado College Scholarship Fund, Memorial Children’s Hospital Fund, Colorado Springs Fire Department, Pikes Peak Center for the Performing Arts and many other venues.

She continues to promote eastern classical dance forms to students by holding lectures and demonstrations throughout Colorado Springs’ schools. Some of the schools she has visited are Fountain Valley School of Colorado, William J. Palmer High School, Cheyenne Mountain High School, Doherty High School, North Middle School, Russell Middle School, Eagleview Middle School, Lewis Palmer Middle School, Mountain Ridge Middle School and Gold Camp Elementary School.
